Naturopathic medicine is a primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. Symptoms of disease are understood as warning signals of improper functioning of the body. Treatments are designed to address the underlying cause of disease by stimulating the healing capacity of the body for restoration of normal function. Treatments are chosen based on the individual patient, including their physiological, structural, psychological, social, spiritual, environmental, and lifestyle attributes.
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) may be considered as the family doctors of complementary and alternative medicine. NDs are registered by the Ontario government following successful completion of at least 3 years of post-secondary education that includes pre-medical sciences, 4 years at an accredited naturopathic medical college, and Ontario entry-to-practice examinations. NDs support patients with all health conditions and of all ages.
First appointments last between 60 and 90 minutes so that all symptoms and underlying causes may be explored. A physical exam and blood or urine testing may be conducted. Treatment programs may include an individualized combination of nutrition, botanicals (herbs), acupuncture, supplements, homeopathy, physical medicine, counselling, or referral to another healthcare provider.
Video consultations are also available for new and current patients across Ontario. However, telemedicine is not ideal for everyone and patients should be willing to attend in-person appointments at least once every 6 to 12 months, or as required for safe and effective care.
