Top 5 Healthy Experiments While in Isolation

Healthy ExperimentsThere are a few things I’ve always wanted to try, but there were always so many people around me, it would’ve been inconsiderate! Maybe you can relate? And if I only had a bit more time, there are activities I would enjoy learning and experimenting with from home. I’ve compiled a short list of healthy experiments here on the chance that they support your health in deeper ways during this challenging time.

Healthy experiment #1: Raw garlic

Crushed, maybe in a teeny bit of raw honey, 3 to 4 cloves a day for 2 to 3 days. This is one of many variations of recipes known to help the body fight colds and keep the sinuses clear! Here’s an old recipe on our blog that I often refer to.

#2: Natural deodorant

Some people find that if they just stick it out for a week or so, their body “gets used to it” and it’s more effective than they thought it would be. This is definitely an experiment to try when the only people around you who can complain are family! And it might come in handy during the summer, when mosquitoes are attracted to fragrances in many traditional deodorants. There are dozens of products and recipes to experiment with online. Most products you have to apply more than once a day, and some do well in conjunction with a “salt stone”.

(Your family members or housemates might not appreciate if you attempt both garlic and deodorant experiments at the same time…)

#3: Cosmetic product detox

I’ve heard many anecdotes from people who camp for extended periods of time who find that their hair becomes more protected by natural oils and stays clean for two or more days longer than usual. Other people have successfully used a boar bristle hair brush (used a few times a day) to reduce the need for shampoo. If we can become more comfortable with less product, consider the additional environmental benefits this would have.

#4: Dietary experimentation

If you’ve ever considered trying a short (supervised) fast for the first time, or the more popular intermittent fasting, or an elimination diet or dairy elimination for 2 weeks to see which food is irritating you, now might be the time to do it. (Our Holistic Nutritionists and Naturopathic Doctors are available online to help if you need it!) I posted an article on our blog about “detox” a number of years ago now, that is still relevant today. And here’s an article by Dr. Angela Hunt on the Fasting Mimicking Diet.

#5: Yoga, Qi gong, and Tai Chi

These ancient artforms (they’re so much more than just exercise!) offer so much potential for health maintenance and healing. We have some great online classes and resources from local teachers Amber Potter and Mona Warner. I also like “Yoga with Adriene” on youtube, and the very customizable “DownDogApp” website.
