Overweight? It’s Not Your Fault

~ Dr. Sonya Nobbe, ND

Dr. Natasha Turner, a well known Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto, wrote a series of books about weight-loss, including “The Hormone Diet”, in which she describes how to address hormone imbalances to lose weight. She recently appeared on the Dr. Oz show to discuss how to melt fat fast by re-setting your fat-burning hormones. You can view the show here.

This weight-loss science may seem new, but it is in fact a well known facet of nearly every holistic health philosophy, which is that all body systems work together to achieve health. If one hormone is out of whack, other hormones and indeed other systems such as the immune system and even emotional health are affected, and this impacts many health parameters, including weight. In her book, Dr. Turner says: “So many of us believe that we can get healthy by losing weight; the truth is, we must be healthy to lose weight.”

When exploring where your system is out of balance and how this is connected to difficulty losing weight, Naturopathic Doctors explore not only hormone balance, but also physical traumas that disrupt optimal body function, environmental toxins that disrupt hormone balance, emotional health including serotonin deficiencies, and food intolerances. We look at the big picture and refer you to the correct specialists for thorough healthcare.

If weight-loss is one of your goals this new year, I encourage you to move beyond the old counting calories approach and work to improve your body’s entire health, so that weight-loss comes naturally.

Adapting to the Season of Winter – with Restoration!

~ Carol Belanger, BA, RM, BHS

Many among us complain about the winter – not just about the weather conditions affecting us, but also about the short days and long nights. Fact is, we need the restoration winter brings to us. Like Mother Nature we all need a season of rest. However, we’ve forgotten about natural cycles.

In our fast-paced, multi-tasking, spur-of-the-moment, sound-bite lives, we are seriously out of sync with a long, slow, relaxing break. We don’t associate long, slow and relaxing with hardly any activities. Even yoga classes are more often about endurance, strength and power than they are about relaxation.

Like Winter and Mother Nature, there are instinctive and natural factors influencing us, and if we use them to our restorative advantage, we will find increasing harmony and balance with our shorter days and longer nights. Before long, they’ll be thru and we’ll find ourselves busier than ever come Spring.

Insomnia suggestions

By Jocelyne Leyton, D.O.M.P.

As part of the team at KIHC, I volunteered to be one of the contributors for the December Newsletter on Insomnia. Little did I know that I would suffer from insomnia in the last two weeks. In my life I have had little difficulty in sleeping with the exception of emotional stress.

In my work as an Osteopathic Manual Practitioner I hear complaints from many patients about insomnia as well as from children. Most of us commonly experience sleep disturbance due to stress and environmental changes but when it becomes chronic this becomes a health burden. For some people, pharmaceutical intervention is sought and for others non-prescription supplements, mind-body relaxation techniques and sometimes alcohol.

One dictionary definition says insomnia is a chronic inability to fall asleep or to enjoy uninterrupted sleep. Our sleep/wake cycle is influenced by our biological clock called the circadian rhythm. This circadian rhythm affects our physiological process. Our circadian rhythm tends to be synchronized with cycles of light and dark as well as

Chronic Hurry and the Holiday Season

~ Brooke Vlachos, RMT

“Live in each season as it passes; breathe air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each. Let them be your only diet drink and botanical medicines” Henry David Thoreau

Hurrying is often associated with unpleasant tasks. We rush through things we feel we have to do thinking: “I just HAVE to get this finished”. What should be a blessing: picking out or creating the perfect gift for a loved one, making homemade egg nog, or cleaning a house that will soon be filled with family and friends, becomes a begrudging chore, a TASK. We are so busy rushing from task to task, especially at this time of year that it’s very easy to miss out on enjoying what makes this time so special.

My advice for the healthiest of holiday seasons is simple:

Insomnia… Drug-free relief.

~ Dr. Sonya Nobbe, ND

Our ability to enjoy good quality sleep is one of the ultimate indicators of balance in our lives. Sleep is a reflection of our relationship with our external environment and it enables us to connect internally to our subconscious mind in the form of dreams. Many ancient medicines use dreams and a person’s sleep habits to help identify imbalances so that a prescription for whole mind-body wellness can be determined. Conventional medicine considers restorative sleep to play a critical role in the proper functioning of our mood, hormones, and immune system. Disordered sleep is a risk factor for a multitude of health conditions, including breast cancer and heart disease.

Insomnia is Such a Pain… In More Ways than One

~ Dr. Christina Vlahopoulos, ND

Sleep disturbances can be one of the more prevalent complaints in people with chronic pain. Of course it is hard to relax and get to sleep when you cannot get into a comfortable position. However, what if it was your lack of sleep that was making your pain worse? Or maybe it was the lack of sleep that caused your chronic pain in the first place?

Recent research has shown a reciprocal relationship between chronic pain and sleep. Some studies showed that sleep deprivation indeed caused an increase in pain perception in previously healthy adults. The participants felt overall muscle and joint pain, tenderness and fatigue. Therefore, the less sleep a person got, the more pain they felt.

Can’t Sleep? Can Massage Therapy Help?

~ Joel Ackerman, RMT

It is easy to associate massage therapy with relaxation, stress reduction, and ‘working out the knots’. However, one of the most underappreciated aspects of receiving a good massage is the wonderful night of sleep that so often follows a massage therapy treatment. In a society that seems to be moving towards an epidemic of sleep debt, where an estimated 50% of adults in North America are chronically underslept, it is vital that we understand the importance of sleep in our lives and find ways to improve how we sleep.

Sleep was once thought to be a passive activity, but as the science of sleep develops, we now understand how important sleep is! Sleep is actually a highly regulated process, in which the body performs several vital activities, some of which simply don’t occur at any other time.

Welcome, Dr. Gerann Murphy, ND

Hippocrates once wrote ‘wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity’. I chose to be a naturopathic doctor because of my passion to help people achieve their full potential through wellness.

Many symptoms and medical conditions can be reversed or at the very least greatly improved through naturopathic medicine. You don’t have to be taking drugs indefinitely and/or feeling fatigued, achy, depressed, bloated, etc.

I offer treatment that is evidence-based, holistic, natural, safe and effective; and is specific to you and aimed at removing the cause of your symptoms or dis-ease. Beyond treatment, I teach you how to lead a healthy lifestyle so that you remain well into the future. In essence, my job is to put myself out of a job!

My medical practice is focused on family medicine, meaning that I’m comfortable treating health conditions for people of all ages. I treat digestive upset, reproductive concerns, heart disease, diabetes, stress, fatigue, depression, anxiety, insomnia, thyroid conditions, menopausal symptoms, menstrual irregularities, weight concerns, allergies, asthma, cancer, immune dysfunction, acute and chronic pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, prostate concerns, skin conditions, autism, ADHD and more.

I hold a Bachelor of Science from McGill University in Montreal and a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine from the Boucher Institute of Naturopathic Medicine in Vancouver, where my training was received under the widest scope of practice for naturopathic doctors in Canada. I am licensed, with high standards, to practice naturopathic medicine in both Ontario by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy – Naturopathy (BDDT-N) and British Columbia by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC).

I have a personal background in competitive sports and I’ve worked and volunteered abroad and across Canada for many years as a teacher and wildlife biologist. When I’m not seeing patients, I love to give talks on naturopathic medicine, practice yoga, run, enjoy the great outdoors and spend time with family and friends.

I’m very happy to be home in Kingston accepting patients at my medical practice. I think it’s important for you to be comfortable with your doctor, so I welcome you to a complimentary consultation where you can meet me and ask me any questions you may have. I very much look forward to seeing you!

Make My Pain Go Away…

What causes your headaches? Your menstrual cramping? Your arthritis flare-ups? The underlying cause of each must be vastly different, but most of us are likely to treat it the same way – with medications that block inflammation (i.e. anti-inflammatories). But is this good for us? Can it cause complications in the long-run?
